This is a fun activity, best done outdoors and exposed to the elements! But it is designed to make students think about the difficult reality many face when they need shelter after a disaster.
The task will encourage team work and creativity. We would recommend keeping teams to a maximum of five students per shelter.
You may wish to explore various ways to test the strength and durability of the shelters created. How stable are they? Can everyone fit comfortably inside? Is the shelter dry? How would you test this?
"Shelter building was so good as it made me realise how hard it must be to cope with a disaster."
